Discussing Squid Game with Mike Seymour of fxguide
Last week, our Executive Producer Emma Kolasinska and Compositing Supervisor Tav Flett sat down with fxguide's Mike Seymour to discuss the unique considerations of bringing VFX to Squid Game: The Challenge for its podcast series.
When you're working with something so iconic, with hundreds of real contestants competing, 200 cameras rolling, and a demanding editorial schedule - as well as unpredictable material - this was a brief with a difference, so it was great to dig into the detail with Mike, and discuss what it was like bringing VFX into a reality format while ensuring visual alignment with the original Squid Game show.
We talk about using LiDAR scan data - invaluable for this project - the challenge of matching CG assets to live action and how having a workflow that could pivot quickly was essential for working at the super-fast pace of reality TV.
As Emma says: “This series has been a great example of the value VFX can bring to unscripted television. We’re able to blend CG assets into the real footage to keep the real emotion intact and still deliver the kind of visual impact audiences expect from Squid Game.”
