The motion graphics behind Union with David Olusoga

The brief

The project was led by our Creative Director and Co-founder Rob Hifle, with the support of motion graphics lead Joe Hockney. The scope required us to deliver a visual narrative through the design and direction of graphical elements; the wealth of archives, historical maps spanning hundreds of years, and the historical construction of the Union flag.

A critical challenge was the management of a substantial volume of archive material. We were tasked with transforming historical documents and low-resolution archive footage into visually compelling graphics that seamlessly integrated with the narrative.

What we did

We used our expertise in visual storytelling to enhance the quality of the archive visuals and deliver iconic graphics that symbolised the poignance of the history of the unification of Great Britain.

We employed subtle 3D CGI lighting, dust and directional compositions to complement the specially shot footage and work harmoniously with the tempo of the film. The scenes worked on often involved longer shots and we were required to take the lead in shaping sequences. Given the diverse archive pieces, we created a cohesive look through artificial camera work, tying together disparate footage.

In terms of technical tools we primarily used After Effects for motion graphics, with occasional integration of Cinema 4D, and Nuke.

A unique aspect of the project was our close collaboration with the BBC’s editing team. Having worked with Series Producer and Director Francis Welch on ‘Statue Wars: One Summer in Bristol’ and David on ‘Britain's Forgotten Slave Owners’, we have a trusting relationship that allows us to be fluid with schedules and creative direction. The ongoing dialogue and collaboration with the series Editor Dilesh Korya, also contributed to our hands-on approach during the live edit.

The results

We delivered full motion graphics across the entire series that visually depicted some of the most critical themes of the narrative – notably the Union Jack flag and archival material.

The first episode of Union with David Olusoga aired on BBC Two from Monday 2nd October 2023 and the full box set is available on BBC iPlayer.
