The Crown

A sweeping drama taking viewers into the heart of the Royal Family.

For season 6 of the multi award-winning series, we created a breathtaking cosmology sequence to convey a key emotional moment in the ‘Willsmania’ episode.

Set in the aftermath of his mother’s death, the scene transports Prince William from the terrestrial to the galactic, a momentary respite from the ‘mania’ of the real world.

With the aim of demonstrating William’s fragile emotional state, we worked closely with the team in the very early stages of conception to deliver on this, crafting a cosmic scene where the flash of forming stars echoes the flash of a paparazzi camera, and the isolation of deep space reflects William’s inner loneliness.

As known experts in cosmology VFX, we brought together procedural volumetrics and cinematic lighting techniques - alongside NASA data - to accurately replicate the nebula and Earth observed by William from the space shuttle.

Filmed at Ridgeway Studios using state of the art virtual production tools, our team was on set to ensure the seamless integration of live footage with VFX, working closely with The Crown’s Director May el-Toukhy and Director of Photography Rasmus Videbæk, throughout the shoot.
