The Twister: Caught in the Storm
The story of a deadly tornado and the impact on those caught up in it.
This Netflix documentary follows a group of high school students as the 2011 tornado carves its deadly trajectory towards their graduation ceremony in Joplin, Missouri. Based on their accounts and archival footage, we created key dramatic sequences and devices, including the tornado itself.
The tornado shots included both its interior and the wider storm atmospherics - we created full CG environments with live action props and debris captured on a dedicated shoot.
We also visualised a coma scene - featuring burning cross imagery to reflect the town’s religious values - as well as additional graphics and a title card.
Collaborating closely with the film’s director Alexandra Lacey, we developed a visual tone that drew from contemporary references such as Stranger Things, while remaining respectful of the survivors’ lived experiences.
